Paradox Interactive's 'Hearts of Iron 4' used to be an exceptional game. Centered on grand strategy in World War II, the game offered history buffs a chance to take on the role of Winston Churchill or Franklin Roosevelt or even Adolf Hitler or Josef Stalin. Actually, the game lets you play as just about any world leader from the time.
Ghost recon future soldier review. Sadly, I now find the game unplayable. The problem? Changes made to the game's naval system.
Paradox has made that most egregious of errors in this area: breaking something that was fixed. Where 'Hearts of Iron 4' previously allowed players to deploy warships to fleet commands, home bases, and areas of operation, it now requires players to manage a tedious, confusing task force system. Want to send a massed fleet to contest Nazi U-Boat hunter groups in the mid-Atlantic? Forget it. The game will now split all your ships into random task forces. Want to send 200 warships into a Pacific Fleet under Adm. Chester Nimitz? Forget it. The ships now seem to inevitably dissipate into various naval bases and sit there. Also, reserve fleets: They seem to absorb the main battle force even when the ships are needed for the front line. I used to annihilate Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto's navy by mid-1943 and corral Japan to the mainland by late 1943. Now, my navy is near defeat by early 1943.
To be fair, I recognize that there are probably ways to mitigate the aggravation of these new complexities. I get that some players may even enjoy the new changes. But the basic issue is that I do not. And reading reviews of the new naval system, I'm quite confident that many players share my frustration.
The great irony here is that this was so unnecessary. 'Hearts of Iron 4' is a game of great detail, historical accuracy, and variability. Using industrial statistics from the 1936 period onward, it shows why America was always likely to win the World War II — even, for example, had the Soviet Union and Britain collapsed to Hitler and Australia to Japan.
But until the naval system goes back to that which wasn't broken, like Ireland in the 1940s, I'm sitting out this war.
The console in Hearts of Iron IV can spice up gameplay, speed things up, and fix commonly-encountered problems. It is a very useful tool for almost every player, regardless of their favored playstyle. This guide explains how to open it, and the definitions of some HOI4-specific terms like country tags and equipment codes. To jump to a particular part of this article, use the following links:
How to Open the Console
Opening the console in HOI4 is as simple as pressing a hotkey. The most commonly available hotkey is `, simply press this key and the console should open up - it is usually positioned in the top left of your keyboard, under the ESC key. If your keyboard doesn't have that key (due to keyboard layout), or that hotkey isn't working, here is a list of other hotkeys to open the cheat console:
- SHIFT + 2
- SHIFT + 3
- ALT + 2 + 1
What is an argument?
An argument is a 'parameter', or piece of data you pass to a command. In the command tag ENG, 'ENG' is an argument, and in the command ae light_tank_artillery_equipment_1 100 both 'light_tank_artillery_equipment_1' and '100' are arguments. On HOI4Cheats.com, you can find detailed explanation for each and every argument a command has on its own command page (e.g. the spawn command).
What is a country tag?
Lord of the rings in dreams. A country tag is a 3 letter tag (or code) assigned to a country that is unique. It is used in commands to specify a specific country.
Usually, country tags are quite 'obvious': Germany's is GER, Frances is FRA, Poland's is POL, etc - but sometimes tags can be less straight-forward, for example, Iran's is PER (for Persia). If you are struggling to find/guess a country tag, you can search for it on our country tag list.
Newly formed nations that don't exist at the start of the game will have an incrementing tag starting with D and then a number - the first new nation will have the tag 'D01', the second will have 'D02', etc. If you are unable to guess one of these country codes, you can use the tooltip debug command to enable debug tooltips, after which, the country tag will be shown when you hover over the country on the map.
What is an equipment code?
Equipment codes are used to identify pieces of equipment. Much like countries and country tags, each piece of equipment has its own unique equipment code. Equipment codes tend to be less 'guessable', and in some cases can be very random, although they usually relate to the item they are for.
The most common command equipment codes are used within is the add equipment command. This command takes two arguments: the code of the equipment you wish to add, and the amount you wish to add.
If you'd like to look for an equipment code, our equipment codes and names list will come in very handy. It is a table of every equipment code to name conversion currently in the game.

Gameplay[edit]
Players play as a nation in the world in the years leading up to, during, and immediately after World War II. There are three main alliances in the game: the Allies, the Axis, and the Comintern. Nations in the game can attempt to join these alliances. Players can also control their nation's economy, government, and military. The game ends when there is only one alliance left or when the end date is reached; the winning alliance is determined through a victory point system, with points being given to alliances that control key regions or cities.[1]
Sequels[edit]
A sequel to Hearts of Iron, Hearts of Iron II, was released in 2005. Two spin-offs were created for Hearts of Iron II: Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game and Arsenal of Democracy: A Hearts of Iron Game. The third game in the series, Hearts of Iron III was released on August 7, 2009. Hearts of Iron – The Card Game was released as a free-to-play, browser-basedcollectible card game on October 3, 2011.[2]East vs. West – A Hearts of Iron Game was scheduled to release in 2014, but was canceled. Hearts of Iron IV, the fourth main installment in the series, was released on June 6, 2016.

Hearts of Iron: Platinum was released in 2004 with the intention of improving several elements of the original game.[15] According to Metacritic, Hearts of Iron: Platinum received slightly more favorable reviews than the original Hearts of Iron.[12]
Ban in China[edit]
The game was banned in the People's Republic of China because of the game's depiction of Taiwan under Japanese control and Tibet, Sinkiang, and Manchuria as independent nations (historically, Manchuria was a Japanese puppet state and Taiwan was under Japanese control for most of the time period depicted in the game).[16]
